Abstract

The chapter focuses on the polysemy of the body part term noga âleg/footâ and its diminutive nÃ³Å¼ka in Polish. Using Cognitive Linguistics as a theoretical framework and corpus-based methodology, the two lexemes are compared as to their semantic extensions and usage patterns. While both provide source domains for metaphoric and metonymic mapping onto similar target domains, their overall semantic networks are different when frequency criteria are examined. It is argued that the morphological derivative has developed lexicalization patterns that go beyond the notion of diminutive, but which are coherent with the results of previous research on other body part terms.
