Abstract

This chapter offers a comparative analysis of body parts terms for the concepts of FOOT and LEG in four languages of Peru: Central Quechua, Harakbut, Urarina, and Wampis. We analyze the metonymic and metaphoric processes underlying different expressions involving these body parts, as well as their semantic extensions, including predicative expressions. We show that although the languages have quite different structures, the underlying semantic processes governing different expressions with foot, leg and other lower body parts seem to explain the compelling semantic convergence observed in their lexical repertoires as well as in other dedicated constructions. The article offers analyses of body part terms from lesser-known languages (in some cases, for the first time) and contributes to the typology of their lexicon and the semantic phenomena associated with them. Overall, our findings are fully compatible with Embodiment Theory and other important principles of Cognitive Semantics.
