Abstract

This paper examines the figurative extensions of the Hungarian term láb, which encompasses both the leg and foot, derived from the leg’s functions as a stable support and its role in locomotion within the domain of human. These extensions are explored through metonymic chains, or serial metonymies involving multiple conceptual shifts, emphasizing the interaction between physical experience and cultural conceptualization. The láb ‘leg/foot’ for stability metonymy triggers chains that include animate entity, physical and abstract condition, social concepts (such as institution, work, and family), intellect, and interpersonal relationships. Meanwhile, the láb ‘leg/foot’ for motion metonymy is linked to domains such as physical motion, work (extended to diligence/laziness and contrasted with mental abilities), misfortune/trouble, and opinion/acting. Notably, the domain of emotion is absent in both stability and motion-related extensions. Cultural conceptualizations, such as the negative perception of laziness and the emphasis on self-reliance in distress, were also identified.
