Several of the contributions to this volume originated in a workshop on ‘Translators, Translations and Mobility in the Mediterranean’, held at the European University Institute on 31 January and 1 February 2022. This workshop was part of the COST Action (CA. 18140) ‘People in Motion: Entangled Histories of Displacement across the Mediterranean (1492–1923)’ (PIMo), funded by the European Union and chaired by Giovanni Tarantino (University of Florence). This publication, centered on the question of translation and mobility, extends the geographical area concerned beyond the Mediterranean, while still keeping Mediterranean preoccupations at the heart of the investigations. We would like to thank those participants in the PIMo workshop who were unable to contribute to the present publication (Elisabetta Benigni, Ida Caiazza, Jorge Flores and Elisavet Papalexopoulou) for their contributions to the discussion on that occasion.
