Abstract

At the end of the sixteenth century a substantial group of Sephardim arrived in Livorno, transforming the city into a prosperous merchant port in Europe, as well as one of the most prominent Jewish printing centres. During the golden age of Livornoâs publishing activities (i.e., the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries), a huge number of JudeoâSpanish books were published. The majority of Sephardic Spanish works published in Livorno were intended for religious edification: to re-educate Jews who were no longer able to read Hebrew and to curb a lack of religiosity as well as a growing indifference toward the practice of worship. The first aim of this article is to examine the emergence of JudeoâSpanish rabbinic literature published in Livorno from the eighteenth to the mid-nineteenth century within the context of the renaissance of vernacular reading culture throughout Europe and the Ottoman Levant. The second aim is to explore the main features of rabbinic literature in the Sephardic vernacular, based on the analysis of three noteworthy, but as yet unedited, texts, which are here regarded as important examples of the mediation between âeliteâ and âpopularâ writings.
