Abstract

Drawing on Bourdieu’s conceptual framework, in conjunction with that of social networks analysis, this chapter studies the publishing dynamics around literary translations from Russian in 1950s–1960s Italy. Through the analysis of editorial correspondence, the chapter looks at the specific case study of the left-wing publishers Einaudi and Feltrinelli, related in varying degrees to the Italian Communist party, and the role of editors and translators in the cultural transfer of poetry and novels with the Soviet Union. It argues that translation was not only a means to reconfigure Italian culture, but through translation Italian cultural agents sought to position themselves both in the context of the post-war redistribution of power and the transnational exchanges of the Cold War. Translation becomes therefore a lens through which we can reveal the micro-dynamics and contradictions of transnational cultural networks in the context of book diplomacy.
