Abstract

This paper reveals the identity of one of the scribes mentioned in the colophon of The Blinding of Truth by Falsehood (P.Â Chester BeattyÂ II). The colophon is very fragmentary, so much so that Gardiner commented that it seemed useless to discuss its remnants in detail. The colophon has been overlooked by scholars ever since. Inspired by Material Philology, which has demonstrated the importance of studying paratextual features such as colophons, this paper examines the colophon anew. Despite Gardinerâs reservations, the research revealed some new insights. The remaining traces bear the name and titles of the scribe Piay, known from P.Â TurinÂ C (= P.Â Turin Cat. 2093/236 = Late Egyptian Miscellanies). The latter mentions him as the one who wrote the âinstruction of letter writingâ for his apprentice. The paper offers a reconstruction of the colophon, as well as an improved reading of Gardinerâs transcription. As a result of this new reading, the colophon sheds light on the social context of the papyrus, especially its relationship to temples and education.
