Abstract

Literary ostraca are most often studied through the perspective of the composition. The study of ostraca as material objects is largely focused on pieces from the Late Period on, i.e., Demotic, Greek, and Coptic. Hieratic ostraca, by contrast, have received more limited study, with most examinations focused on the limestone material from Deir el-Medina. The recent excavation of a corpus of ceramic hieratic ostraca from Tell Edfu, in southern Upper Egypt, presents the opportunity to study both text and material object. The Edfu ostraca primarily date from the late Second Intermediate Period-early 18th Dynasty and are largely administrative texts. Amongst them, however, are two literary pieces, including Tell Edfu Ostracon 131, which includes an early copy of a portion of the well-known Instruction of a Man to his Son. While the copy provides insight on the textâs early transmission, both the literary composition itself and its geographical reach, its contribution to discussions of scribal practice and activity is more significant in its consideration as a material object. Having been found within a corpus that is otherwise administrative, TEOÂ 131 provides a means of comparison for local scribal practice in a provincial scribal community during the Second Intermediate Period.
