Les bovidÃ©s occupent une place majeure dans le bestiaire Ã©gyptien. Quâil sâagisse de la vie quotidienne (agriculture, Ã©levage), de la vie religieuse et funÃ©raire (divinitÃ©s bovines, sacrifices) ou encore de la mythologie (Vache du Ciel, forme taurine de Seth), les bovins sont omniprÃ©sents. Ce fait se reflÃ¨te Ã©galement dans le corpus des Textes des Pyramides oÃ¹ le corps humain est frÃ©quemment Ã©voquÃ© Ã lâaide dâhiÃ©roglyphes et de mÃ©taphores liÃ©es aux bovidÃ©s. Ainsi des ennemis du dÃ©funt, acolytes de Seth, dont les membres sont volontiers assimilÃ©s aux cuisses de bovins (khÃ©pesh) que lâon dÃ©coupe lors des sacrifices rituels. Ainsi Ã©galement des oreilles et des mandibules du roi, rÃ©activÃ©es au cours de diverses cÃ©rÃ©monies telles que lâOuverture de la Bouche, et qui sont rÃ©guliÃ¨rement figurÃ©es, dans le texte, au moyen de leurs contreparties bovines. Cette recherche sâattache donc aux cas dans lesquels une partie du corps humain est reprÃ©sentÃ©e par celle dâun bovidÃ©, tentant dâen comprendre la raison et par lÃ mÃªme dâexpliquer le processus cognitif qui en est Ã lâorigineâ¯: mÃ©taphore, mÃ©tonymie, valorisation iconique, etc.

Abstract

Bovids are one of the major species of Ancient Egyptian bestiary. In everyday life (agriculture, farming), religious life (bovine divinities, sacrifices) or even in mythology (Heavenly Cow, bull form of Seth), bovines are omnipresent. This importance is also reflected in the Pyramid Texts where the human body is frequently mentioned through hieroglyphs and metaphors linked to bovids. This is the case of kingâs enemies, acolytes of Seth, whose limbs are often assimilated to bovine forelegs (khepesh) cut during ritual sacrifices. It also concerns the ears and mandibles of the king himself, reactivated during ceremonies like the Opening of the Mouth and frequently figured in the text with bovine parts. So, this research deals with cases in which parts of the human body are rendered by bovine onesâ¯: what are the reasons of such substitutionsâ¯? What kind of cognitive process can we observe thereinâ¯? Metaphor, metonymy, iconicityÂ â¦ The relations betweensigns, meanings and referents will thus be highlighted and analysed.
