Abstract

Dedun is a minor figure of the Egyptian pantheon, but, at the same time, he is the main divine representative of the southern border of Egypt. In the Old Kingdom, the god is documented exclusively in the Pyramid Texts, and, in the Middle Kingdom, both in the Coffin Texts and other sources. In the two corpora of funerary texts, the theonym is determined with signs of birds, which contrasts with the images of the god, systematically depict as an anthropomorphic being. Thus, the aim of this paper is to study the meaning of these semograms to gain a better understanding of the nature of this divinity during the Old and Middle Kingdoms.

Dedoun est une figure mineure du panthéon égyptien, mais, en même temps, il est le principal représentant de la frontière sud de l’Égypte. À l’Ancien Empire, le dieu est documenté exclusivement dans les Textes des Pyramides, et au Moyen Empire, il l’est à la fois dans les Textes des Sarcophages et dans d’autres sources. Dans les deux corpora de textes funéraires, le théonyme est déterminé par des signes d’oiseaux, ce qui contraste avec les images du dieu, qui est systématiquement représenté comme un être anthropomorphe. Le but de cet article est donc d’étudier la signification de ces sémogrammes pour mieux cerner la nature de cette divinité pendant l’Ancien et le Moyen Empire.
