Abstract

This essay identifies JÃ¼ngerâs anti-modernism as key impulse of his experience of modernity, and investigates the role of aesthetic experience in the strategies of self-optimization which characterize his repeated attempts to transcend the modern limitations of the self. âOrganic constructionâ, it is argued, is JÃ¼ngerâs solution following his experiences of WW1, but this strategy changes following WW2. This is demonstrated in two sections. Prior to WW2 the modernist aesthetic is shown to play only a minor role, as individual development is subjected in Der Arbeiter to proto-Fascistic energies. After WW2, however, notably in Heliopolis, aesthetic experience in decidedly pre-modernist styleâBildungâplays for JÃ¼nger the major role in promoting the alienated modern individualâs development. In conclusion Peter Sloterdijkâs anthropotechnics are compared with JÃ¼ngerâs changing notions of self-optimization.
