Abstract

This chapter explores the German life reform movement at the turn of the twentieth century, emphasizing how its focus on self-optimization and body management, as articulated in a wide array of ideological literature, reflected an inherently ambivalent response to the challenges of modernity. It examines the writings of Heinrich Pudor (1865–1943), a pioneer of nudism and one of the movement’s most prolific figures. Pudor’s work on body culture reflects life reform’s reassessment of the aesthetic values of the human form, while also highlighting the broader ideological implications of its secular doctrine of salvation and renewal. Pudor’s advocacy for improving physical and mental health is tinged with a persistent anti-Semitism, revealing how the movement’s agenda of self-optimization through altered everyday practices intersected with völkisch notions of national revival.
