Abstract

Poland is known as the country with the highest indicators of religiosity and the most influential social position of the dominant Roman Catholic Church in Europe. Abortion, in vitro fertilisation, and homosexuality are objects of controversy that began after the collapse of communism, manifesting in parliament, civil society and the media. The Catholic Church is also very active in fighting against the liberalisation of law and social attitudes. The leading question that this chapter aims to answer concerns the role of references to religion in debates on above mentioned biopolitical topics, based on research of weekly magazines and Letters of Episcopate.

The article consists of three parts. After the introduction, which presents the position of religion in contemporary Poland, the understanding of public religion and methodological information is introduced. The next section is devoted to the analysis of the material, which shows differentiated understandings of religion and its role in the legitimisation of attitudes towards abortion, in vitro fertilisation and homosexuality.
