Abstract

This chapter takes its departure in the observation that, contrary to 40 years ago, religion is now discussed as a central factor in the social and economic development of society. Whether globalisation and the new multicultural type of society should be appreciated or countered has become a central question for political systems. The situation and importance of religion as a factor is discussed historically, noting that its prominence in recent times can be traced to Samuel P. Huntington’s 1993 Clash of Civilizations. Four of the nine ‘civilisations’ proposed by Huntington were characterised as religions. Careful analysis of the role of the Danish Lutheran Church shows no clear correlation between active Christianity and political attitudes; the religious dimension has marginal importance for the choice of a political party and political values. The tendency also holds when the political values of the Muslim immigrant population of Denmark are analysed. The conclusion is that to use religion as an indicator of economic behaviour, attitudes, and values in the debate on globalisation is only weakly based on facts.
