Abstract

The main thesis of this article is that there are certain traits in Norwegian society, including in its religious life, that help to reduce ethno-political tensions and polarisation. This does not mean that Norway is a completely idyllic country; globalisation is contested, and there are instances of counter-globalisation. In this chapter, some factors that increase polarisation are mentioned and discussed, including scepticism towards and discrimination against minorities, inputs from populist politicians and conflict-oriented media, and a rather poor record of contact between Norwegian churches and migrant faith communities. However, the main point of the chapter is to analyse several traits that work in the opposite direction and reduce tensions and polarisation. There are well-developed arenas for dialogue between different religious and worldview communities. Furthermore, a clear majority of immigrants and their descendents share positive views on democracy, freedom of speech and other human rights. Norwegians have a more positive opinion of immigrants and immigration than a couple of decades ago. A majority of Norwegian church leaders want a more liberal policy towards immigrants and asylum seekers than the present policy. Finally, and not least of all, a modest degree of social and economic inequality has facilitated integration. Free education as part of the welfare state has resulted in a significant proportion of people with an immigrant background taking higher education and moving into the middle class.
