Overview

In this chapter I share the writing workshop approach I employed in a graduate, methods English education course that I taught during a semester of remote instruction. The graduate students in the course were comprised of inservice and preservice teachers. A brief summary of the approach is shared in this overview section. To model building hope into the writing process, I designed a student-centered writing community for which each week of class one graduate student was responsible for creating a writing prompt of their choosing. In the first ten minutes of class we would all freewrite to that prompt. Then the student facilitator would read through the freewrites (posted to Blackboard) and lead us in a discussion around the rationale for the prompt, ideas the prompt generated, and themes that emerged in the thread. The first week, I created the prompt and led the discussion to model what students could do, and then subsequent weeks, each student wrote a prompt and led us in discussion. This weekly writing workshop project culminated in a more finalized writer’s portfolio in which students selected three of the eleven pieces they had written during the course of the semester, and revised, expanded, and polished for submission. The pieces and prompts shared here are the rich ideas of a group of students who built community and hope together through writing, during the most uncertain and unsettling times. The chapter includes many of the prompts generated in that first year of this project, as well as in subsequent years, and three student essays that were written in response to student-created prompts are shared. Credit is given to the first-year prompt creators and the sample essay writers. Here, we invite you to witness hope moments created through writing and experiences through writing.
