Abstract

Studies on teacher cognition and identity have established strong links between what teachers think and what they do. For language teachers, this has a direct impact on how language is framed and taught. However, despite robust discussion concerning the nature(s) of language, multilingualism, and language acquisition across fields of scholarship (for example, through the scholarship of the multilingual turn), the question of how language educators understand these concepts in relation to their own identities as language users remains largely unexplored. This chapter draws on interview data from language teachers in Australia and New Zealand to explore the multiple, dynamic ways in which language teachers frame their own identities as users of multiple languages: that is as bilinguals, multilinguals, and plurilinguals. We read these data through the frame of language ontologies (see Authors, 2021) to elucidate how language – or rather, language(s)/languaging – may be performed and created in educational contexts. Rather than attempting to reach a prescriptive definition which fits all language users, environments, and contexts, we argue that language teachers (and, by extension, language learners) may benefit from reframing language and language users in multiple ways.
