Abstract

The study of the âImpact and long-term sustainability of the physical rehabilitation and socio-economic development in and around five key cultural heritage sites located in Pakistanâs Gilgit-Baltistan regionâ aims at providing backgound information on livekihood structures and communication infrastructure in Gilgit-Baltistan of Pakistan. Tow aspects dominate as tourism development is perceived as a means of combining the preservation of cultural heritage sites with improving livelihood conditions, and asecondly, an emphasis is laid on skill development for professional training that can be translated in income-generation. Five locations were selected for detailed scrutiny: Karimabad, Altit, and Ganesh as the oldest settlements in Central Hunza with significant assets in cultual heritage as well as the outstanding villages of Shigar and Khaplu where preservation of historical forts was combined with their transformation into high-end hotels. The focus was much wider as beyond these focal points places of worship, health infrastructure and educational facilites were improved for the benefit of local communities. Tourism industry is embedded in overall political and economic developments and thus a highly vulnerable form of enterprise. Among the prospects for future developments is an envisaged circular route for sustainable tourism in High Asia. a retarding factor was the Atabad Lake disaster that has dramatically shown how natural forces and hazards are to be expected and respected in providing a secure hitat and environment for resident populations and visitors.
