The paper addresses the notion of peace parks in high mountain areas. It perceives peace parks as a valuable instrument of transboundary cooperation in conflictual regions. By looking at previous experiences, it becomes obvious that the idea was born in the first half of the 20th century and has been instrumental for establishing the Alpine and Carpathian Conventions. Early activists suggested a peace park for the Pamirs already in the 19th century. Subsequently various scholars advocated for a demilitarization and neutralization of border regions in Central Asia. Peace parks could contribute to peacebuilding, mutual cooperation and exchange of expertise and knowledge as well as help for promoting nature protection and ecotourism.
