Human rights are fundamental rights that belong to every individual simply because they are human. These rights are not bestowed by any particular entity but are instead universal human rights shared by all individuals, irrespective of their nationality, gender, ethnic origin, race, religion, or language. The UN Convention on Refugees has defined several basic minimum human rights that are deemed mandatory, including the provision and protection of all refugees living within the borders of signatory countries. These rights comprise, among others, the freedom of religion and access to employment and basic housing. This chapter gives an overview of the actual accessibility of these basic human rights to refugees, as well as the challenges and complexities that governments face in protecting refugees and ensuring that they receive these rights.
