Mixed movements or mixed migration relate to large groups of people traveling along a similar route or using the same means of transport as a collective group for different reasons. These groups may include asylum seekers, refugees, and migrants. There are six types of refugees—people, who for various reasons, have fled their home countries—including ‘refugees,’ ‘asylum seekers,’ ‘internally displaced persons,’ ‘stateless persons,’ ‘returnees,’ ‘religious/political affiliation,’ and ‘escaping war and discrimination based on gender/sexual orientation’. This chapter provides an overview of the diverse reasons for forced displacement and the accompanying challenges.
