Abstract

This chapter examines whether late Byzantine territories experienced climatic change characteristic of the âLittle Ice Ageâ (LIA) and whether this climatic change had significant consequences for the history and population of the empire. It begins with an analysis of the LIA in the Ottoman period to assess scenarios and evidence for climatic change and impacts in the eastern Mediterranean. It then analyzes the physical and written evidence for climate variability, extreme weather, and impacts on late Byzantine territories. Although there is evidence for episodes of extreme seasons and natural disasters, the possible long-term and large-scale effects of LIA climate change remain difficult to define.
