Abstract

This paper reviews the ecology of the Crusader States of the Levant, both as the Crusaders encountered it when they established these entities, and as it reflected Frankish rule. The Crusader States, as short-lived entities ruled by Franks but inhabited mostly by Arabs and Syrians, provide a privileged window through which to understand how lordly ambitions responded to and also shaped an alien ecology. This paper argues that, when the Franks altered Levantine ecology or agriculture, they did so in pursuit of novel cash crops. Most of the time, though, they were content to take what the existing land and agriculture offered, and instead modified trade to meet their needs, especially as their territory shrank.
