Abstract

We present a geographical mapping of epidemics in the southeast Mediterranean during the period of the Byzantine Empire (AD 330–1453), with the help of historical epidemiology. Between the 4th and the 14th centuries, the coast and interior of North Africa and the Middle East often suffered from epidemic outbreaks. In the case of the Byzantine Empire, it seems that a series of factors would also lead to epidemic outbreaks. The most prevalent among these factors were endemic diseases, enzootic diseases and their natural foci, human activities, as well as the direct and indirect effects of the environment and climate.
