Abstract

Ever since Deissmannâs seminal work, researchers have been heavily divided over mainly two aspects of âin Christâ: firstly, its background was thought to be in the Jewish language and traditions (such as the use of the Hebrew preposition be in the Hebrew Bible and its translation in the Septuagint, the wisdom traditions as found in Philo, or early Judaism in general), the Greek mystery religions (including Gnosticism), or Graeco-Roman literature and culture. Secondly, âin Christâ was interpreted to be spatial, incorporative, instrumental, modal, ecclesiological, eschatological, or historical. This chapter details the scholarly opinions since 1892.
