Abstract

The paper first analyses the history of the philosophical treatment of animals, with an emphasis on Aristotle and Hegel. By contrast, it exposes the perspective of aesthetics and contemporary animal studies. It focuses on the painter Franz Marc, who took a very progressive attitude towards animals, opposite to anthropocentrism, at the time of the historical European avant-garde. He recognized a capacity for empathy and self-awareness in some of the more highly evolved animals, especially horses. Marcâs animal painting depicted these animals as autonomous subjects. The question is whether they really have such a developed subjectivity. The article examines some proposals for animal studies that understand the subjectivity of horses through a concept of agency in a particular environment, where humans, if they have to be there at all, will collaborate with every horse as an individual, not just as a representative of the species.
