Abstract

The unique time in cinema history was highlighted by Lotte Eisner in her seminal book on Weimar cinema Die dÃ¤monische Leinwand. Together with another book by Siegfried Kracauer, From Caligari to Hitler, it generated a strong impact on a widespread perception of the historic and artistic phenomenon of the mostly silent films in Germany of 1920s. Their interpretations made â as Elsaesser put it â films appear as the booksâ illustrative evidence.Â« Weimar cinema is strongly marked by the expressionist exposures of the overwhelming evil, which is linked to disorders of modernist society, its institutions and the other time to mythical ghosts and creatures. In our contemporaneity, the artistic and philosophical reflections of the breakthroughs of so-called generic fascism refer to the Weimar period in which cinema, as an agency of mass culture, prominently frames the considerations of the relations between art and politics. Yet, art histories and cultural theory often reflect the movements, which composed German avant-garde in literature, painting and theatre such as expressionism, Neue Sachlichkeit and Dada in a manner, which excludes cinema, only allowing sometimes that the artistic movements influenced cinema production of the time and very rarely vice versa. However, the whole picture of the period in German arts would be incomplete without considering the imagery provided by films, which contributed along with radical art, a visibility of Â»the badÂ«.
