Summary

Sheep breeding projects involving ram testing in large populations require a fairly precise and early estimation of milk yield as a selection criterion. Current milk recording for lactation yield estimation in sheep breeding projects involving large populations is one of the most difficult, tedious and expensive practices. Hence, the urge for a fairly precise and early estimation of milk yields as selection criteria is immense. This paper focuses on obtaining a method for a selection criterion using part lactation records in order to shorten the generation interval by early use of lambs as breeding stock and to lower recording costs. The 1989-90 lactation records of 139 Awassi ewes of the Ceylanpinar State Farm in Turkiye were used. In the study simple linear and quadratic regression equations were used in order to estimate the whole lactation yield by using 15, 30, 45, 60, 75, 90 and 105 day part lactation records. According to the preliminary results part lactation records of 60, 75, 90 and 105 days for estimating the whole lactation yield by simple linear regressions were found to be highly effective.
