Summary

Awassi sheep are favorably characterized by their high milk production, adaptation to adverse weather and feeding conditions, strong flocking instinct and reasonable growth rate on feed lot. All these factors were reasons for Turkey and other countries to use Awassi as an improver breed. However, the fat tail of the breed is considered as a disadvantage from the reproduction as well as the carcass points of view.

The paper summarizes results of comparing the Awassi sheep with other breeds in Turkey and with its crosses with native breeds both in Turkey and in some other countries.
