Summary

Veterinary drug residue analysis utilizes a very broad range of analytical methodology and is at the forefront for applications of new technologies in extraction and determination. The entire spectrum of analytical techniques from very rapid on-site testing on farm, in slaughter plants and in milk processing plants through laboratory screening procedures to confirmatory analyses are utilized. Analyses for veterinary drug residues are undertaken primarily by regulatory agencies to ensure the safety of the food supply and to monitor the observance of regulations on the use of veterinary drugs; this requires testing to ensure that residues are below the Maximum Residue Limits (MRLs) or, in the case of banned substances, that no residues are detectable.

Multi-residue methods are most desirable in that they allow for testing for a range of veterinary drugs but largely these are confined to drug class-specific assays. Routine methods for screening include microbial inhibition tests, immunoassays, receptor assays and the full range of chromatographic techniques.

Mass spectrometric (MS) procedures are increasingly the confirmatory methods of choice although other hyphenated techniques may be used. The development of reference methods in Europe is still outstanding although a number of methods appear to be suitable candidates but must firstly be collaboratively tested. Strategies for veterinary drug residue screening are largely based on random sampling or on directed sampling related to veterinary inspection. While most screening strategies involve a multi-stage process, it is conceivable that for certain drugs a single analysis, based on MS, may provide both the screening and confirmatory functions. There is considerable scope for development of on-site methods which would satisfy the requirements for speed and economy.

Advances in residue extraction and MS determination technologies can be expected. In particular, LC-MS (-MS) is likely to become the method of choice for veterinary drug residues. Methods for the measurement of bound residues are expected to be developed and the role of quality systems will increasingly influence how food companies and regulatory agencies monitor veterinary drug residues in food.
