Summary

Istrian Pramenka sheep in Slovenia originates in Istria and Karst. The name comes from the peninsula Istria. The sheep belongs to the group (Zackel) which are used for milk production. This breed now exists in two countries, Slovenia and Croatia. In Slovenia are now about 500 breeding ewes. They are protected in a conservation program for the conservation of sheep breeds in Slovenia. Istrian Pramenka sheep produce milk with high fat and protein content. Using traditional husbandry methods the Istrian Pramenka produce between 100 and 150 kg milk in the lactation with a fat content of 9% and a protein content over 6.0%. Some animals produce milk that contains more than 12% fat and more than 7% protein with over 23% dry matter.
