Sheep production is an important activity in the South Mediterranean area. The sheep population is about 50 million of head in Algeria, Egypt, Libya, Morocco and Tunisia. These sheep are composed in large extent of hardy and well adapted local breeds. Sheep are raised mainly for their meat, wool and skins. Some adaptation studies were conducted in Egypt and Morocco. These had compared some local breeds for heat stress and water and food deprivation based on the changes in body weight and water turnover. Genetic improvement through selection is low in South Mediterranean countries. Performance recording in private farms is well developed in Morocco, but concerned state-owned farms only in Egypt and Tunisia. Effects of non genetic factors were known, and genetic and phenotypic parameters for some economic traits were estimated. However, phenotypic selection rather than selection based on estimated breeding values is commonly used. The genetic improvement method that is widely used is the crossbreeding. In most countries, local breeds were crossed to exotic breeds to improve growth and carcass quality, or to prolific breeds to increase fecundity.
