Guercino made his fortune thanks to the continuous demand for his paintings from wealthy patrons. His exemplary professionalism, an iron constitution, and an ability to work almost non-stop meant that, with one or two exceptions, he was able to meet this constant stream of orders. It was to escape from this pressure that we can assume that he amused himself in his meagre amounts of spare time by making drawings that included grotesques and caricatures. Nicholas Turner explores these humorous drawings made at great speed, apparently âoff the cuff,â with the subject seeming to take shape as the drawing developed. They were made for fun, for the amusement of family and friends, and certainly not for the consumption of a wider public.
