Lucia Tantardini demonstrates Giovanni Paolo Lomazzoâs interests in the subjects of the grotesque and physiognomy. His famous Self-Portrait as Abbot of the Accademia della Val di Blenio at the Pinacoteca di Brera, Milan, masterfully exemplifies his supreme skills at depicting highly naturalistic facial features with a piercing psychological rendering and subtle grotesque nuances. Lesser known, however, is Lomazzoâs production of drawn teste caricate which currently amounts to a handful of examples. Based upon comparative analysis with both his drawn output and handwriting, this essay clarifies the nature of the artistâs experimentation with the genre to re-address questions of attribution.
