Acknowledgments
Many people contributed to the writing of this book. I would like to thank first of all my former academic advisor Carter Findley, who urged me to turn my dissertation into this book, read and reread the book in its numerous drafts, and made valuable suggestions for its improvement. Without him, this book would probably never have seen the light of day. The late John Guilmartin was much loved by his students and colleagues for his ebullient personality, kindness and extensive knowledge of military history. It was he who played a large part in the formation of my thought on guerrilla war and counterinsurgency. Sadly, he did not live to see this book come to completion. John Abbott Richards gave invaluable help in the preparation of the drafts for the maps of this book, whose final versions were prepared by the cartographer Erik Goosmann of Mappa Mundi Cartography; thanks to Erik for his reasonable prices, attention to detail, quick turn-around time and positive attitude. My co-worker at the University of Washington Libraries, Theo Gerontakos, gave me invaluable help with formatting the final version of the manuscript of this work. Junghae Lee, another co-worker, also helped me. The staff at the Ottoman Archives and the Millet Library in Istanbul were helpful in providing access to the documents I needed for my study. Lastly, I would like to thank my family for their continued love and support through the difficult process of writing my dissertation and preparing this book for publication.
