In chapter two I discuss the military and political history of the Zaydi Imamate of Yemen in the years prior to the Ottoman occupation. I trace the evolution of the Imamate from an institution based on âcharismaticâ authority as exemplified in the character of the imams as charismatic military and spiritual leaders to one modeled on âpatrimonialâ authority, of state institutions centered around the person of a powerful monarch who might or might not be a military and spiritual leader. From thence I discuss the collapse of the Imamate beginning about the middle of the 19th century as a result of the loss of revenue and the corrosive influence of tribalism. I analyze the character of warfare in this period as essentially âlimited,â as it was based on the values of tribal culture rather than those of Islam.
