Abstract

The lexeme ini in Mixtec has been studied with regard to its semantic extension in the locative domain (e.g. Brugman 1983; Brugman and Macaulay 1986; Hollenbach 1995). This article is dedicated to the role of this same lexeme in Mixtec language of emotion and experience. Ini, in its etymological origins the body part term for âheartâ, represents the seat of the âinner lifeâ of a human or animal and is used in a variety of lexicalized and idiomatic expressions, generally metaphorical or metonymical, which express emotional, cognitive, and related concepts. As I have argued in my masterâs thesis (Weissmann 2019), these constructions can be described in terms of psycho-collocations as defined by Matisoff (1986), and they constitute the main strategy to refer to abstract experiential concepts in Mixtec.

This chapter examines the semantic range of concepts associated with the ini as âseat of the inner lifeâ based on Alvaradoâs Vocabulario en lengua misteca (1593), which documents Mixtec from the Teposcolula region in the early colonial period. As a functional âgridâ for the analysis of the psycho-collocations, I use the model of the functional domain of experience proposed by Verhoeven (2007) in the context of her work on experiential constructions in Yucatec Maya. The analysis shows that Mixtec psycho-collocations with ini cover three out of five experiential subdomains: emotion, volition and cognition. The two subdomains of perception and bodily sensation are not associated with ini. Thus, ini is the locus of large parts of the functional domain of experience and subsumes concepts generally separated in the Western dichotomy of the emotional and the rational.
