This chapter examines how culture influences the conceptualization of the âheart.â The data and analysis presented here consider uses of English âheartâ metaphors and metonymies in modern Christian music. By focusing on a subculture of English speakers, the analysis shows that although the metaphors and metonymies appearing in the corpus of Christian music overlap with âheartâ metaphors found in secular usage, cultureâs influence creates variation in how these extensions are expressed. This variation is compared with historical changes in English âheartâ metaphors as well as other descriptions of culture and embodiment influenced by other religious and/or philosophical practices.
