Abstract

The paper discusses the role of the body part term śulem ‘heart’ in the conceptualization of emotions in Udmurt within the framework of conceptual metaphor theory (Lakoff and Johnson 1980) and embodiment thesis (Gibbs 2005).

The term śulem ‘heart’ is substantial in the linguistic expressions of emotion concepts in Udmurt. The research material consists of 109 phrases and idioms collected from dictionaries and corpus data, and the term appears in the conceptualization of distress, liking, fear, happiness, anger, disliking, desire and relief. The concepts of distress, liking, fear, happiness and anger appear in detail in the paper. The role of another term, köt ‘abdomen, stomach’, is also briefly mentioned. Based on the results, it can be concluded that in Udmurt the locus of emotion is heart (śulem). Several conceptual metaphors are applicable for different types of emotion concepts (and occasionally the exact same linguistic expression can reflect on different emotions). Quantitatively, the emotion is physical agitation metaphor is significant in the conceptualization of emotions with the term śulem ‘heart’, but emotion is container/force/fire metaphors were also significant. In addition, the data suggests that Udmurt emotion concepts are characterized similarly to Turkish emotion concepts.
