Abstract

In this chapter, we discuss ways in which writing motivation is used as an outcome to evaluate the effectiveness of writing intervention research. We open with a discussion highlighting the importance of including writing motivation as a factor of evaluation. We then turn the discussion to specific motivational constructs recurrently used as outcomes in the field. These include writing self-efficacy, writing intrinsic motivation, and writing attitudes. Using examples from published writing intervention research work, we discuss ways in which each construct is defined and measured, potential issues related to measurement, and patterns across findings to date. We conclude the chapter with a synthesis of general trends across writing intervention studies using writing self-efficacy, writing intrinsic motivation, and writing attitudes as outcomes. Within this discussion, we provide guidance for researchers who include motivation variables as part of their intervention research.
