Abstract

The census is usually conceived as a very formal institution and not a place of integration. In this chapter, I argue that registration in the census was used as a means of deploying integration by informal means during the Roman Republic. It followed a double pattern: from above, that is, from censors who decided to register non- Roman people, but also from below, from non-Romans who decided to act as Romans (pro cive) and register, thus claiming their own agency and, facing the delays or the negative of the government, taking control of their own integration process.
