Abstract

What does Augustus have to do with lycanthropy, cannibalism, and werewolves? How can the Augustan Gods be associated with such cults as the rituals of Despoina in Lycosura or the Kabiroi in Thebes? The spread of the idea of the divinity of the emperors throughout the Mediterranean Sea meant the rise of many different types of imperial gods and rituals. Some were closer to traditional Greek and Roman religions. Some were not. Impositions from Rome or spontaneities by the provincials have usually been the explanations used to expound the creation of these new imperial gods. This narrow model – this dichotomy between imposition and spontaneity – fails to explain the dynamic processes that were involved. A different explanation to the questions raised before is presented here. It will take into consideration both Roman, centrally inspired messages, together with the long process of integration of emperors in local panthea. It assesses these unlikely imperial gods as part of a fruitful process of creative symbiosis and misunderstandings.
