Abstract

Formal poetic analysis of Latin and Umbrian sacral texts has turned up aspects of style and formulaics but not meter, hence the texts’ classification as “rhythmic prose.” Latin and Umbrian prayers can rather be scanned as four-beat verse. The universality of counting accents in fours makes finding the meter in Italic unsurprising. Results are compatible with Watkins’ syntactic and stylistic analyses and brings into relief possible patterns of responsion. The fact that the primitive meter is also found in poetic traditions that are not founded on accent also suggests its prehistoric coexistence with the PIE quantitizing syllabic system of Meillet.
