Abstract

This paper assesses the role of the Anatolian languages in the study of Indo-European cultural and phraseological reconstruction, where new evidence and an improved understanding of the primary material has the potential to help us make better distinctions between cases of inheritance, of contact, and of independent developments. The analysis of a case study from the Hittite Laws (§ 37), along with comparative material from both IE and non-IE cultures, will show that the Anatolian material can greatly help us refine and expand current taxonomies of Indo-European culture.
