Abstract

This chapter examines the creation of types and the origin of archetypes in the imagery of empresses in the period between the 4th and 7th centuries in the territory of the Central Balkans. Due to the influences of a variety of Western and Eastern cultural traditions, as well as its position on historically fertile ground, the territory of the Central Balkans offers critical visual material regarding images of empresses. Research suggests the origin of some representations, from Roman goddesses to the Theotokos, in the archetype of the divine heiress, along with aspects of the mother figure or virgin. All other types were based in and constructed from this archetype. Among them are the peer ruler, the independent sovereign, and the religious maternal/virginal type. These types of empress images further resulted in the creation of prototypes or even stereotypes, as seen in representations of ordinary women of the time.
