In the Cyzicus episode, Valerius combines various Virgilian intertexts to destabilize the Aeneidâs teleological model, in which the destruction of a city (Troy) leads to the foundation of another (Rome). Lucanian echoes add further complexity and dissolve the boundaries between bellum externum and bellum civile. Unbeknownst to the Argonauts, the tragic night battle between them and their hosts is the result of divine intervention: King Cyzicus killed one of Cybeleâs lions while hunting, leading to an act of divine vengeance. As the reader later learns, Jupiter approves of the tragic nyktomachy, so that nefas paradoxically results from Jovian fatum. The complexity of this first extended battle narrative in the Argonautica recontextualizes the praise of Vespasianâs victory in the proem and reminds the reader of an element in the Flavianâs rise to power often omitted in official propaganda: their triumph in the Roman civil war following the demise of Nero.

Zusammenfassung

In der Cyzicus-Episode verbindet Valerius unterschiedliche vergilische Intertexte, um das teleologische Programm der Aeneis, in dem die ZerstÃ¶rung einer Stadt (Troja) zur GrÃ¼ndung einer anderen Stadt (Rom) fÃ¼hrt, zu destabilisieren. Bezugnahmen auf Lucan tragen zur Steigerung der KomplexitÃ¤t bei und lassen die Grenzen zwischen bellum externum und bellum civile verschwimmen. Die Argonauten erfahren nicht, dass das tragische Nachtgefecht zwischen ihnen und ihren Gastfreunden das Resultat gÃ¶ttlicher Intervention ist: KÃ¶nig Cyzicus erlegt bei der Jagd einen von Kybeles LÃ¶wen, womit er unwissentlich eine gÃ¶ttliche Racheaktion provoziert. Wie der Rezipient spÃ¤ter erfÃ¤hrt, heiÃt Jupiter das tragische Nachtgefecht gut, sodass dieses nefas paradoxerweise als Resultat von Jupiters fatum-BeschlÃ¼ssen erscheint. Die KomplexitÃ¤t dieser ersten lÃ¤ngeren Kriegshandlung in den Argonautica dient der nachtrÃ¤glichen Kontextualisierung des Vespasian-Lobes im ProÃ¶mium und erinnert das Publikum an jenes Ereignis, das fÃ¼r den Aufstieg der Flavier zentral war, aber in der offiziellen Propaganda meist unterdrÃ¼ckt wurde: ihr Triumph im rÃ¶mischen BÃ¼rgerkrieg, der auf den Untergang Neros folgte.
