Abstract

This chapter sets out to investigate the depiction of the nexus between (im)mobility and mental well-being in Australian television. Drawing on the new mobilities paradigm from the social sciences (Sheller and Urry), particularly the distinction between mobility and motility (Kaufmann), as well as the idea of a politics of mobility (Cresswell), the article discusses how the mini-series Stateless (2020) combines themes of refugeedom and mental health in a productive manner to criticise Australian immigration policies as well as conventional notions of what it means to be a refugee. More specifically, the chapter argues that the series juxtaposes the traditional figure of the refugee (here an Afghan asylum seeker) with a character displaced in a more unconventional way (here an Australian citizen wrongfully held in an immigration detention centre as she attempts to escape from her traumatic past) in order to evoke cognitive dissonance with regard to the latter and reveal her state of mental disturbance. As will be shown, these strategies serve not only to reconceptualise the notion of migration by shifting the focus to mobility, but also to encourage viewers to reflect on the perceptual framework that typically informs cultural representations of – and thus to influence viewers’ engagement with – humanitarian crises such as forced displacement.
