Abstract

To seek explanations for Ken Keseyâs idiosyncratic use of the present and past tenses in One Flew Over the Cuckooâs Nest, the present study postulates a hypothesis of focalisation windowing, mapping the linguistic patterns onto three cognitive facets of focalisation â the interactional, concurrent, and evidentiary. Accordingly, this chapter explores the intrinsic relationship of tense, focalisation, and mind in this novel, arguing that the narratorâs different mental states are represented through the different facets of focalisation which are linguistically rendered in the present and past tenses. This study offers a cognitive narratological interpretation of Keseyâs intriguing tense patterns in terms of âmadnessâ representation, shedding light on the triangulate relationship of the linguistic features, narrative structures and consciousness representation in narratives. It also argues that via a multi-dimensional view of the minds in the storyworld, Kesey deconstructs the default binary opposition between the mad and the reason.
