Abstract

Diana Evansâs novel 26a (2005) uses intermedial strategies and the twin motif to narrate and overcome the dialectic of mental health and illness. The first constituent of this dynamic, intermediality, has been exposed to incorporate otherness into an allegedly homogeneous medial framework (Neumann 2015). The twin motif â the second constituent â is differently connected to otherness: twins âforeground questions of reiteration and splittingâ (de Nooy 2005, xviii). In 26a, these two narrative devices interlink and call for explorations of mental illness and health against the backdrop of sameness and alterity. Narrating the story of Black British twins, the novel problematises notions of dis-/ability-based alterity. Thus, 26a adds to ongoing conversations in the field of critical medical humanities to destigmatise mental illness.
