Abstract

By studying two seemingly distant phenomena â the cross symbolism and the appearance of mythological animals in the Late Iron Age art â this contribution argues that the Christian European worldview spread and was accepted by natives already prior to the official Christianisation in Estonia. The cross symbolism, represented on various objects and in multiple forms of design, was the most apparent in the twelfthâearly thirteenth century. In addition to imported objects, the cross was also favoured by local masters, indicating the value of the symbol to local craftsmen and/or customers. Likewise, the motifs of mythological animals, leucrottas, griffins, and dragons, partly as imported objects, partly manufactured locally, indicate that not only the knowledge of Christian doctrines spread, but different cultural phenomena, predominantly aristocratic, were accepted by the east Baltic inhabitants. As a result, an interlaced worldview formed where the local nobility had included different elements from the prestigious Christian European culture into their worldview. Such persons could have had Christian identity, despite remaining pagans for the rest of Christian Europe.
